Raising Chickens at our Cocoa Beach Home

In the Spring of 2007 our family thought it would be cool to raise a few chickens to enjoy fresh eggs and the nostalgic of having chickens roaming the back yard. Well our first set of chickens were named Lucy and Ethel. After a few months it was unfortunate Ethel became missing. Not knowing whether someone stole her or if she wandered off or was attacked we all missed her. Lucy would walk around the yard looking for her sister and got to where she was so sad that she would just sit down for us to pick her up and love on her. Who would have ever thought that Lucy would become like a true pet. Well, as the months went by we continued to care for her and finally the day came when she laid her first egg, it was as if we found gold. Lucy was truly a part of our family and she was so happy to reward us with a fresh egg each morning.

If you have ever lost a family pet before then you know what it's like to be without them. After several months of Lucy laying eggs we found one evening she was taken by a racoon. I never thought that I could miss a little ole chicken, but we had become attached to her. I'm not much on animals but Lucy just seem to grow on me and we all enjoyed her.

New Baby Chicks Replace Our
Lucy

Laverne and Shirley are our new baby chicks we picked up in May of 2008. They are from the same family as were Lucy and Ethel with very pretty colored feathers.

Mekenzie was so proud to finally get a new set of chicks that for the first month she carried them with her everywhere she went in a shoulder bag. The chickens are friendly and let you hold them, but they're just not the same as our Lucy.

By fall the chicks should start to lay and once again we will enjoy fresh eggs around our home.
