Summertime Snook Fishing Off
Cocoa Beach, Florida

Each year gets more and more difficult to go fishing with my husband Captain Richard as our kids grow older and the teenage years of our oldest daughter absorb our extra time and energies. However, Richard had a day off and he knew we'd do well on a certain tide along the beaches off Brevard County for large spawning snook as he'd caught a few the day before and had seen many as he caroused the shoreline in our tower boat.

Now... for many non-fishing friends and readers, a snook is one of the most prestigious and tasty inshore gamefish in the world. In Florida there are a couple of closed seasons in which you can only catch and release snook and during the summer months of June thru August you must release all snook as they are spawning and can be targeted more easily and should not be harvested while laying eggs and reproducing.

Most of the year, snook are sought after during the nights around Port Canaveral and Sebastian Inlet and other parts of Florida. But during the spawn, snook can be coaxed into biting during the daylight hours on particular tides and conditions. It's these days that Captain Richard looks to take his clients in search of big female record sized snook.

Light Tackle Fishing For Snook

The photograph of the snook on the left is a spectacular catch for anyone. It's my biggest snook to date and I caught it on 12 pound test line to boot. I was so proud that I had not only caught and released this fish, but I did it all on my own with little or no assistance from my husband who took the photograph. Other than following his instructions on how to fight these tricky fish, I did everything from bait the hook to setting up, fighting and landing her.

This fish bottomed out our 25 pound boga grip scale and we estimated her to weigh in at roughly 28 pounds or possibly more. She was a monster and was safely and harmlessly released to be caught again.

Florida laws are very strict about the conservation of snook and their other fisheries. Captain Richard and I support the marine fisheries and have seen a great improvement in the populations of fish from snook, redfish and spotted seatrout in our local Florida waters.

If you want to try your luck at catching a great Florida snook like the one I'm holding, give Captain Richard Bradley a call at Lagooner Fishing guides on Florida's east coast near Cocoa Beach, Florida. There's more snook fishing photos of me Lagooner's Charter Fishing Web Site here. There's also a Daytona Fishing for Snook photo too.
